 Welcome to Coronado

Coronado has a distinct charm that can be felt even as one is driving over the famous bridge that connects the beloved island to downtown San Diego.  Founded in the 1880's, Coronado has deep roots in Southern California as one of the first resort destinations in state history.

The entirety of the island can be traversed by foot or on bicycle, though many residents can also be seen running errands on their golf-cart.  The Ferry Landing on the East side of the island offers restuarants, boutique shopping, and seasonal community activities.  Spreckles Park hosts live music concerts every Sunday during the summer months, and at Christmas the Del's pool is frozen over to allow for outdoor ice-skating.

Coronado is the quintessential "small town", but it has evolved with the progression of time in its own quaint way.  The town's little movie theatre is situated on Orange Avenue, and while it plays anything from recent Oscar winners to Dr. No, the theatre has remained so unimposing, if you blink, you'll miss it.

On the southwest side of the island lies the storied Hotel Del Coronado.  In operation since 1888, the hotel has been a favorite vacation spot for many well-known celebrities, authors, and politicians.  A recent renovation has given the entire property new life; whether you stay as a guest or are simply visiting for the day, you can enjoy live music at the beachside tiki hut, relax in the sun, or dine at one of the many five-star restuarants on site at the Del.

The Coronado Unified School District is an educational system unrivaled by many. There are several options for preschool, some home school options, private schools, and public schools. The community has a history of award winning scholastics, with a focus on each child's individual development and personal discovery. The District is overseen by a five-member Governing Board, whose express desire is to see their vision for new ways to teach, learn, innovate, and create come to fruition with the help of the teachers, parents, and students in the community.

Commutability

There are only two ways to reach Coronado by car; one is over the Coronado Bridge, and one is via Silver Strand, which is the isthmus connecting Coronado to Imperial Beach.

Coronado itself is small enough in size to traverse the entire island on foot or by bicycle, though many people prefer to take their golf cart for errands. The main thoroughfare is Orange Avenue, which runs directly through the middle of the main parts of town.  3rd St. and 4th St. direct the flow of traffic on and off the Bridge, while the remainder of the streets are quiet and residential.

Coronado is a short drive to Downtown San Diego via the 5 Freeway.  Once over the Bridge, you have the ability to take the I-5, the I-15, or the 94 freeway to go North, South, or East.

Community

Coronado is known for the grand Victorian Hotel del Coronado, but the community offers so much more than a historic landmark. Across from the hotel, the wide, flat Coronado Beach draws surfers and sunbathers. Its western stretch includes the leash-free Coronado Dog Beach. The Coronado Ferry Landing has shops, restaurants and a small beach. Nearby, Centennial Park offers San Diego skyline views. During the summer months, every Sunday features a new band playing at the "Concert in the Park".  The Tuesday Farmer's Market draws people from the far and wide with its award-winning assortment of locally grown produce. 4th of July festivities are famous on the island; all streets are closed for the Parade that goes down Orange Avenue, and at night fireworks can be seen from every angle. It's a perfect place to visit for the day, vaction for the week, or to call your new permanent home.

What Residents Say...

"It doesn't get better than living in Coronado. I came here as a kid with our grandparents for summer holidays, and I knew I wanted to live here one day.  It took me until my retirement to make the move, but what a magical place to spend these peaceful years!"

"What I was most surprised about was the quality of the schools and the education our kids recieved. The preschool was just down the block from our house, which made it fun to walk to and from with the kids when they were that age.  Once highschool years came around, they didn't want to walk with us anymore, but walk they did to Coronado High, which is about 5 blocks in the other direction. Talk about convenient!"

"When I think of Coronado, I think of the famous Hotel Del, summer nights by the fire pit at Dog Beach, and biking around the island with my friends. I am really lucky our family chose Coronado as our home. I really can't imagine living anywhere else!"

"What can I say? Coronado is described as a 'resort town' - and that's exactly what it is, so I guess we consider ourselves on a year-round vacation! I kid. This place is really special to me, our family, and hopefully generations to come. Best parts - the close community, super safe environment for both young and old, and the fact that you can walk to the beach from pretty much anywhere on the island whenever you want."

"Both of our sons played Water Polo at Coronado High, and the Aquatics Program in this town cannot be beat.  Our kids enjoyed their schooling, and we loved every minute of it."
